Alaçatı

Alaçatı

Alaçatı is a neighbourhood of Çeşme district in İzmir province. It lies about 76 km west of central İzmir and about 9 km east of Çeşme town. The old town is a protected historic area of stone houses on narrow cobbled streets. Most houses were built between 1850 and 1900 from local volcanic stone. Many now serve as small hotels, cafés and shops.

Pazaryeri Mosque stands on the market square. It is the former Greek church of Ayios Konstantinos. Kemalpaşa Street is the main street of the old town. Stone windmills from the 19th century stand on a low hill above the centre. Alaçatı Bay, about 3 km south at the port, has shallow water and steady wind and is used for windsurfing.

From İzmir, take the O-32 motorway. The Alaçatı exit is the last one before Çeşme. Çeşme Seyahat buses from İzmir also stop here. The cobbled streets are uneven, so wear flat shoes with good grip.
