Aphrodisias

Aphrodisias is an ancient city in Geyre, a neighbourhood of the Karacasu district in Aydın province. It takes its name from the goddess Aphrodite. Marble from quarries next to the city made it a major centre of sculpture in the Roman period. The city and its marble quarries have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2017.

The Tetrapylon, a monumental gateway built around AD 200, marked the entrance to the sanctuary of Aphrodite. Beyond it stand the columns of the Temple of Aphrodite, which was later converted into a church. The stadium, about 270 m long, is one of the best-preserved stadiums of the ancient world. The Sebasteion was a cult complex for Augustus and the Julio-Claudian emperors. Its original marble reliefs are shown in the site museum.

The museum and the car park are on the eastern edge of the site. The walk between the monuments is long and partly on dirt paths, with little shade in summer. Check current opening hours before you go.
