Muğla
Bodrum is a port town and district in Muğla province, on the Bodrum Peninsula at the entrance to the Gulf of Gökova. In antiquity it was Halicarnassus, the city of the Carian satrap Mausolus.
Bodrum Castle, the Castle of St Peter, stands on a rocky promontory beside the harbour. The Knights Hospitaller built it in the 15th century and reused stones from the Mausoleum in its walls. Its towers now hold the Museum of Underwater Archaeology, whose shipwreck finds include the Uluburun wreck of the 14th century BC. Less than 1 km inland is the Mausoleum site, the 4th-century BC tomb of Mausolus and one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Its foundations and marble blocks remain.
Milas–Bodrum Airport is about 35 km northeast of the town. Ferries to Kos leave from the harbour next to the castle. Allow at least two hours for the castle and museum. Check opening hours and open sections before you go.
