Amasya
Amasya is a provincial capital in the Black Sea region, set in a narrow valley of the Yeşilırmak River. In the 3rd century BC it was the capital of the Kingdom of Pontus.
Ottoman houses, known as the Yalıboyu houses, line both banks. Most date from the 19th century; many are now cafés, restaurants and small hotels. Above the north bank, the rock-cut tombs of the Pontic kings are carved into the cliff of Mount Harşena. Five royal tombs stand beside the Kızlar Sarayı terrace. They have been on UNESCO's Tentative List since 2015. Harşena Castle crowns the summit. The Sultan Bayezid II Mosque was built in 1485–1486.
Most sights in the old centre are within walking distance. The path up to the tombs is steep, and some stone steps are worn. The castle can also be reached by road. Amasya Merzifon Airport is about 40 km north-west. Check current opening hours before you go.
