Pergamon Acropolis

The Pergamon Acropolis is the upper city of ancient Pergamon. It stands on an andesite hill about 335 m high above the town of Bergama in İzmir province. From 281 to 133 BC it was the capital of the Attalid kingdom. The acropolis is part of the Pergamon World Heritage property, listed by UNESCO in 2014.

The Hellenistic theatre on the western slope held about 10,000 spectators. It is described as the steepest theatre of the ancient world. The Temple of Trajan, built in the 2nd century AD, stands on the highest point. Nearby are the remains of the library, said to have held about 200,000 scrolls, and the foundations of the Great Altar.

A cable car runs from a lower station in Bergama to the upper station beside the entrance and ticket office. Paths are uneven and the theatre steps are steep. Allow at least two hours, and check current opening hours before you go.
