Mount Nemrut

Mount Nemrut is in Kahta district, Adıyaman, about 40 km north of Kahta. Antiochus I, king of Commagene, built his tomb-sanctuary and giant statues on the summit, at more than 2,100 m. A tumulus of loose stones, about 50 m high and 150 m across, covers the top. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987.

On the east and west terraces, statues of gods and of the king sit on thrones. They are built of limestone and sandstone blocks and are 8 to 10 m high. Their heads now stand on the ground in front of them. Visitors watch the sunrise from the east terrace and the sunset from the west terrace.

The last stretch to the terraces is a steep path of about 800 m. The climb takes about 40 minutes. Sunrise is cold even in midsummer, so bring warm layers. Snow can close the site in winter. Adıyaman Airport lies between Adıyaman and Kahta.
