Odunpazarı

Odunpazarı

Odunpazarı is the old Ottoman quarter of Eskişehir, on a hillside about 2 km south of the modern centre on the Porsuk River. Its name means "firewood market": villagers once sold wood from the mountains on a square here. The quarter has been protected since 1981. In 2012 Türkiye added it to its UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List.

Cobbled lanes are lined with timber houses of one to three storeys, many from the 19th century. Their upper floors project over the street. At the centre is the Kurşunlu complex, built in 1517–1525 for the vizier Çoban Mustafa Pasha. Its mosque has a lead-covered dome, and the complex holds the Meerschaum Museum. About 350 m north is the Odunpazarı Modern Museum, a stacked-timber building by Kengo Kuma that opened in 2019.

Trams run from Eskişehir railway station to the quarter. Some lanes are steep. Check current opening hours of the museums before you go.
