Troy

Troy is an archaeological site on the Hisarlık mound, next to Tevfikiye village in Çanakkale province. It is about 30 km from Çanakkale city centre. Homer's Iliad sets the Trojan War here. The settlement layers run from about 3000 BC to around AD 500. Heinrich Schliemann began digging in 1871, and Manfred Korfmann led an international team from 1988 to 2005. The area became a Historical National Park in 1996, and UNESCO listed the site in 1998.

A marked route passes sections of the city walls. The limestone base of the Troy VI wall is still visible. Further on are a megaron-type building, the Temple of Athena and the odeon. A large wooden horse stands in the square at the entrance.

Paths are dirt tracks and railed boardwalks, and the ground is uneven. The Troy Museum, opened in 2018, is about 800 m east of the site. Check current opening hours before you go.
