Edirne
The Selimiye Mosque stands in the Meydan quarter of central Edirne. Mimar Sinan built it for Sultan Selim II, and it was completed in 1575. Sinan called it his masterpiece. In 2011 UNESCO inscribed the Selimiye Mosque and its Social Complex on the World Heritage List.
A single dome about 31 m wide covers the prayer hall. Each of the four minarets is about 71 m tall. One of the complex's medreses houses the Turkish and Islamic Arts Museum. The arasta, a covered market street, runs along the south-west side. After a restoration that began in 2021, the mosque reopened for worship in February 2026.
Edirne is about 230 km from Istanbul by road. Buses from Esenler bus station take 2 to 4 hours. Town buses link Edirne bus station, 5 km south-east of the centre, with the old town. The centre is compact and fairly flat. It is a working mosque, so check visiting times on the day.
