Beypazarı

Beypazarı

Beypazarı is a district town of Ankara Province, about 100 km north-west of the capital. Its old quarter has around 3,000 traditional houses. Most were rebuilt after a large fire in 1884. The ground floors are rubble stone, the upper floors a timber frame finished in an off-white lime plaster. In 2020 the historic town was added to Türkiye's UNESCO Tentative List.

Suluhan, an inn built in the early 17th century by Grand Vizier Nasuh Pasha, stands in the market area. Hıdırlık Hill above it is a viewpoint at sunset. The silver bazaar sells filigree work, and bakeries sell Beypazarı kurusu, a dry butter biscuit.

Go Türkiye puts the drive from central Ankara at about an hour and a half. The streets are cobbled and climb steeply, so wear flat shoes. The İnözü Valley, with rock-cut tombs and dwellings, is a short drive from the centre.
