Antalya
Aspendos Theatre is a Roman theatre in Belkıs, a neighbourhood of Serik in Antalya province. The ancient city of Aspendos lies about 40 km east of Antalya. Zenon, an architect from Aspendos, built the theatre in the 2nd century AD. It is one of the best-preserved Roman theatres in Türkiye.
The stage wall still stands complete. The 41 rows of seats rest partly on the hillside and partly on stone arcades. Holes for 58 poles show that an awning once shaded the audience. In the 13th century the Seljuks of Rum used the stage building as a palace. The agora, a basilica, the stadium and arches of the Roman aqueduct are nearby.
The Aspendos Opera and Ballet Festival is held in the theatre every summer. The upper city with the agora is on a hill, so expect some uphill walking on uneven ground. Check current opening hours and tickets before you go.
